CPT is for international students who are still enrolled in a school program.
Jumpbole Tip: It may take up to 10 work days for CPT to take effect, so try to prepare in advance. CPT work permit must beissued Before the student can start to work, students are not allowed to work outside the CPT time specified in I-20. Part-time CPT allows for not more than 20 work hours weekly off campus; full-time CPT (generally refers to the summer vacation) does not limit work hours, but student must take part-timeClass with credit. In addition, If a student took accumulated CPT for more than 12 months, he/she can not apply for OPT.
OPT is for international students who have finished school work. It must be related to the school major. Non-STEM students have 12 months of internship time; STEM students have 36 months of internship time
Jumpbole Tip: After completing all courses and during the thesis or research period, or after graduation, student can work full time (40 hours per week). All OPT internships (except STEM) must be completed within 14 months. Application for OPT must be received by USCIS prior to student's obtaining a degree.
